Bodycam Shows Officers Rescue Elderly Couple from House Fire

555 West Valley City, UT - Authorities said a Unified Police Department officer, on his way to a funeral for a slain officer, helped rescue an older couple from a house fire Monday morning."I could see there were flames coming out of the top," Officer Brandon Sulich with the Unified Police Department said. "It looked like portions of the roof had already collapsed. "Police said the house was 40 percent engulfed when Sulich arrived; smoke was pouring out of the windows and the roof. Two West Valley City officers who were helping out, so their colleagues could go to the funeral for Officer Douglas Barney, arrived moments later. "I was touched that he had on his full Class A - Police Uniform," Sgt. Trudy Cropper said. "He was on his way to the funeral. He wasn't dispatched to be there -- but he stopped to help these people."The man and woman inside couldn't get out on their own. Cropper and Officer Scott Folkers joined Sulich to help carry and aide the elderly couple up the stairs."The elderly woman was having a really hard time walking," Cropper said. The officers lifted her into a wheelchair. Authorities said the elderly man had recently suffered a stroke and was unable to speak. "The elderly gentleman gave me a thumbs up and smile when I carried him out and sat him down on a chair outside," Folkers said. "This is why we wear the badge."
