Bodycam Released In Taser Incident, Man Later Dies

555 Athens, AL - Athens police released police body camera video of an officer using a Taser on a man who later died. Randy Joe Nelson, 49, was Tased by police Feb. 3 at Athens-Limestone Hospital. Police had been called to assist medical staff with Nelson, who was reportedly struggling with staff members who were trying to give him a mental health evaluation. Nelson was Tased after officers determined he was in danger of hurting himself and others, according to Police Chief Floyd Johnson. Johnson said the mother and hospital staff were informed before the Taser was used. Nelson had trouble breathing at some point after the Taser was used. He died Feb. 8 at Huntsville Hospital. John Taylor, who is representing Nelson's family, said he and two of Nelson's brothers had seen the video. Nelson's mother did not view the video."She did not wish to relive that terrible day again," Taylor said. Taylor said the family is planning to hold a news conference but had not decided on a date and time yet.
