China: If Bond had more time and less money - Mechanic turns banger into amphibious 'boat-car'

555 Automobile mechanic and inventor Xiong Jian astonished residents of the central Chinese town of Taojiang, Friday, by taking his James Bond-style 'boat car' for a ride in the waters of the Zhenzi River. Xiong Jian created the amphibious car by refitting components of a scrap two-compartment vehicle with the useable parts from the a scrap minibus. His wife Jiang Lane described the creation as the result of his "hobby." SOT, Xiong Jian, Amphibious car inventor (Mandarin): "I live beside the river, so, the boat-car is convenient for me. Additionally, it is entertaining for me to refit the car." SOT, Xiong Jian, Amphibious car inventor (Mandarin): "The engine of the car was in the front . When I was turning around the boat the water, some water would infiltrate into it, which is not good for the engine. So, I moved it to the back of the car." SOT, Jiang Lane, Xiong Jian's wife (Mandarin): "It is his hobby. I should support him to do what he likes." SOT, Xiong Jian, Amphibious car inventor (Mandarin): "I calculated the displacement accurately, based on the data of the auto, which is about 1 ton. The depth of immersion is 20cm."
