Sumatra's Mount Sinabung volcano erupted on Wednesday, causing thousands of people to be affected by ash rain in the Karo Regency of North Sumatra, reports say. The volcano eruption was followed by a falling geyser, reaching 3.5 kilometres (2.1 miles) eastwards and 4.6 kilometres (2.8 miles) southwards. It reportedly affected Sukanalu, Tonggal Town, Central Kuta, Gamber, Berastepu, Jeraya and Iron Door, but also several other villages. According to a volcano observatory, Mount Sinabung erupted with amplitude of 120 millimeters and duration of 500 seconds. Sinabung also erupted on December 18. The Indonesian National Disaster Mitigation Agency urged residents to stay alert, and not to enter the three to seven kilometre danger zone around the crater.
