555 The Salt Lake City Police Department released body camera footage on Wednesday of a fatal officer-involved shooting. On November 9, police located a vehicle that was involved in a pursuit the previous week. When officers approached the vehicle, the suspect, later identified as Cody Belgard, rammed into a police car and two other vehicles in an attempt to evade arrest. The passenger complied with officers and was taken into custody. Belgard had several warrants out for his arrest and faced previous charges including, theft and possession of marijuana Belgard also hit officers as he drove away. A chase ensued and police lost track of the vehicle for a while. When the suspect was found, officers asked him to get on the ground and put his hands up, which he did not do. In the video, one of the officers says, "he's got a gun." Reports say he was shot after "not complying" with officers. Belgard was transported to a hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. His family held a demonstration shortly after the shooting. They spoke to the media shortly after the body cam footage was released. Belgard's family told the media that the officers had more options, like using K9's or mace, than to shoot him.
