Suspect dances on truck, takes off shirt during standoff

555 Cordes Junction, AZ - A stolen-car pursuit came to a bizarre ending along I-17 Tuesday evening. The incident started around 4:30 p.m., as Phoenix police started following a suspect truck in the north Valley, near I-17 and Dixileta. Police tried to perform a traffic stop north of State Route 74, but the driver wouldn't pull over, and continued to travel north of the Valley along I-17. Our chopper was overhead as DPS was finally able to slow the pickup truck near Cordes Junction, by using spike strips across the freeway. But it wasn't over yet. "The driver continued northbound at slow speeds, with troopers pursuing, until the pickup lost a tire and came to a stop," DPS said. The driver cooperated with DPS, and was taken into custody without incident. However, that was not the case for the passenger in the truck. "The passenger was acting erratically and failed to comply. At one point he exited the pickup and began dancing on the roof of the pickup. He then re-entered the truck and locked himself in," DPS said. He even stripped off his shirt as he danced on the top of the truck, waving his arms and making wild hand gestures. Finally, DPS troopers moved in, inching closer as they took cover behind a vehicle. After several tense moments, troopers were able to take the second man into custody. The incident caused a huge backup along I-17, but the freeway has since been reopened.
