Dash cam shows ambulance swerve off road, strike crossing guard

555 A crossing guard who was struck by an ambulance in Lakewood Township Monday while standing on a sidewalk is recovering from his injuries Lakewood EMS Chief Crystal Van de Zilver said Tuesday that the guard was struck by a "private service" ambulance on Route 9 at the intersection with Oak Road. The news site The Lakewood Scoop first reported the story with an exclusive video from another driver's dashboard camera. The video shows the ambulance swerving off the road to to the right, apparently attempting to avoid a vehicle that was stopped to make a left turn. The ambulance jumps the curb and strikes the crossing guard, who was on the sidewalk near two traffic cones. Van de Zilver said Lakewood EMS responded to the crash to treat the man. She said she can't reveal any details about his condition, but he is expected to recover. The Lakewood Scoop identified him as long-time crossing guard Andrew Howard and said he suffered a leg injury. Lakewood police did not immediately return a request for information Tuesday. A representative for the Hatzolah first aid squad said the vehicle in the crash was not one of their ambulances.
