Trooper offered to destroy evidence against Knoxville police officer

555 Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Howard Greenlee offered to destroy evidence of a former Knoxville Police Department officer's crime, an in-cruiser video reveals. When confronted months later, Greenlee claimed he was lying to KPD Lt. James Settlemeyer when he made the offer because he wanted to keep the peace between THP and law enforcement in Knoxville, newly obtained records show. An investigation by the USA TODAY NETWORK - Tennessee shows Greenlee has a history of bad behavior dating back to at least 1999, when he sexually harassed an 18-year-old female employee of the Sevier County Clerk's Office. Greenlee remains on the force, with THP commanders opting to issue the trooper a written reprimand for his offer to destroy video evidence against former KPD officer Raiques Crump, the investigation shows. THP Maj. Cheryl Sanders says in a letter obtained via the Tennessee Open Records Act the agency does not believe "Trooper Greenlee's statement will tarnish his credibility as a prosecuting witness in any future cases," and a written reprimand is sufficient punishment. The Knox County District Attorney General's office, though, is now being forced to reveal Greenlee's offer to destroy evidence in the Crump investigation in all cases in which Greenlee is involved, records show. Defense attorneys can then seek to use it to attack Greenlee's credibility on the witness stand.
