Deputy fatally shoots man at Phoenix House

555 A Marion County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man outside the Phoenix House drug treatment facility in Citra early Thursday afternoon. The shooting took place in woods near the treatment center at 15681 N. U.S. 301 in Citra. According to its website, Phoenix House provides "gender-specific adult residential drug and alcohol addiction treatment for men and women, including treatment for co-occurring behavioral health issues." The dead man, whose name was not released because his family members had not been notified, was a 30-year-old with a 10-year history of low-level crimes in Hillsborough County, including drug offenses and petit thefts. The 5-foot-9, 136-pound man was on drug-offender probation for felony petit theft, according to state records. At a press conference, MCSO spokesman Paul Bloom said deputies were called at 12:53 p.m. in reference to a man who had violated his drug-offender probation. The man fled as deputies and a probation officer arrived to arrest him. Bloom said the man ran into a heavily wooded area behind the property. The spokesman said that, when he was approached by deputies, the man was uncooperative and then violently confronted them. At this point, Bloom said, one of the deputies shot and killed the man. The shooter, who was not named, has been with the agency for 12 years. After the shooting, Bloom said the Florida Department of Law Enforcement was called to investigate. As is protocol, Bloom said the deputy was placed on administrative leave. He said the dead man was from out of town and was sent to the Phoenix House as part of his probation. Bloom said he could not give specifics about the confrontation and did not know the details of the man's probation.
