Dash cam footage shows fiery chase that left 1-year-old dead

555 Video captured by a police cruiser's dash camera April 12 shows two South Carolina state troopers clad in reflective vests as the remains of a burned-out car smolder just out of frame. Their cruisers block Interstate 85 as they discuss the brief chase that left the car burning on the side of the road and the man they said they saw fleeing through the passenger-side door moments earlier. As they talk, they don't realize a 1-year-old girl, strapped in her car seat, is among the charred ruin of the red sedan. Xena Rah'lah Norman died that night in the fire, and Imhotep Osiris Norman, her father and the reported driver of the car, is charged in her death. Dash cam footage obtained by the Herald-Journal through a Freedom of Information Act gives a visual account of the chase and fire that left the infant dead and her father behind bars. The red car, which had its emergency lights on for the duration of the roughly five-minute pursuit, burst into flames about three minutes before it came to a stop on I-85, leaving a trail of burning debris in its path as it drove down the highway. Eventually, the car rolls to a stop as a Highway Patrol cruiser speeds in front of it and another flanks it. But by that time, the vehicle is billowing thick plumes of smoke and fire from the undercarriage is licking its sides. Shortly after the car stops moving, it goes out of frame, and a trooper with his gun drawn can be heard saying, "Somebody just rolled out of the passenger side." During a bond hearing the day after Xena's death, Norman told a judge he didn't know the car was on fire when he left his daughter.
