Police officer runs a red light and crashing into and flipping a PT Cruiser

555 A four-vehicle accident involving a Richmond County Sheriff's Office police cruiser closed the intersection at Jones and 15th streets Monday evening and sent a deputy and another driver to the hospital. The accident occurred around 6:20 p.m. According to James "Buddy" Ray, who was driving on Jones Street and clipped the police cruiser, the deputy driving ran the red light on 15th Street and hit three cars. Ray said the police cruiser did not have its lights on. He said the cruiser first hit a PT Cruiser in the left lane on Jones Street and caused it to overturn, then an SUV in the right lane, and Ray's truck hit the police vehicle as he was crossing the intersection. All three vehicles were headed straight, Ray said. "I just ran this curb here and was going to go across, the light was already green when I came into view," Ray said. "(The PT Cruiser) went upside down and I locked my brakes and I caught the back end of his car." According to the sheriff's office, the cause of the accident has not been determined and the Georgia State Patrol will investigate. Sgt. William McCarty confirmed that the deputy and the driver of the PT Cruiser were taken to local hospitals.
