Policeman, 30, is stabbed in the back with a hunting knife in a 'random attack'

555 The knifeman who allegedly stabbed a policeman in the middle of Sydney's Central Station calmly walked up to him brandishing the weapon. Constable Hayden Edwards, 30, was responding to an assault when he was allegedly attacked from behind about 6.45pm on Friday. CCTV footage shows the alleged attacker sneak up behind Edwards holding the 30cm hunting knife and suddenly stab him in the back as he walked past. The man then took a few more steps before turning to face the officer in a combat stance as if expecting retaliation. Instead, Constable Edwards crumpled to the ground as more police converged on the scene with their guns drawn. Constable Edwards managed to get back to his knees and draw his pistol, aiming it at the assailant who was waiving his knife around. The attack triggered a long standoff with police before the man jumped on to the train tracks and was eventually tasered and arrested. It is understood about 12 officers were at the scene and pepper spray was used. Footage of the arrest showed a group of policemen drag the man out of the station. During a press conference on Saturday, police said Constable Edwards was lucky to have escaped with only minor injuries. He suffered a six centimetre-long wound and was taken to hospital for surgery, then was released on Saturday night.
