Man armed with a rifle is shot at by police

555 Old news story Authorities this week identified a man who was fatally shot in Harbor City on Memorial Day and the suspect who was subsequently shot by police after he declined to cooperate with officers' commands to drop the weapon shortly thereafter. Angel Hernandez, 23, of San Pedro was shot in the area of 253rd Street and Marigold Avenue about 9:25 p.m. Monday, May 27, police said. He was rushed to a hospital, but died of his injuries. Officers at the scene and found another man carrying a rifle and walking about a block away in the area of 253rd Street and Petroleum Avenue near Normont Elementary School, police said. An officer-involved shooting occurred after the officers ordered the suspect to drop the rifle, police said. The suspect, identified by police as 23-year-old Kenneth Alonso Rosales, was injured by gunfire and fled on foot, but was quickly captured by police and taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries. He was stable as of Friday, police said. Rosales was booked into jail on suspicion of murder on May 29 and was being held on $2 million bail, according to jail records. A candlelight vigil to honor Hernandez' memory was planned for 7:30 p.m. Friday night at 253rd Street and Marigold Avenue, near where the shooting occurred.
